Thursday 10th October 2019 marked World Mental Health Day, at E.G.Lewis Group, we know that it benefits all of us to talk about mental health within the workplace.
Back in December 2018, we signed an employer pledge with Time to Change, the growing social movement run by charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness which supports people to open up to mental health problems. By signing, E.G. Lewis Group committed to changing the way we think and act about mental health in the workplace.
1 in 4 of us will experience mental health problems this year and having a colleague in your corner can make all the difference. That’s why this World Mental Health Day we delivered a series of events and activities to support the confidence of our people having conversations around mental health and building their understanding of mental health issues in and out of the workplace.
This October, we used the printable resources from the Time to Change Website and Mind Cymru to get people talking. The main focus was bringing together the right ingredients for our people having that conversation about mental health. Whether that was tea/coffee, biscuits and close friends or a room full of people challenging mental health stigma within the workplace. That was not all – on the evening of World Mental Health Day, our employees participated in our monthly fitness within the workplace (FWTW) initiative which saw us raise £142.00 in support of Mind Cymru and complete 84 repetitions of seven body-weight exercises relating to the statistic that in the UK, 84 men take their own lives each week.
We are proud to highlight that we were awarded the judge’s Impactful Conversations Award at Legal and General’s 2019 Not A Red Card Awards event at The Kia Oval on Tuesday 1st October. Having originally been shortlisted for The Innovative Use of Sport Award, which recognises companies from across the United Kingdom that has used sport in a unique way to raise awareness, educate or address mental health issues in the workplace. School of Hard Knocks (SoHK) were the winners overall for their work which utilises sport to tackle issues surrounding unemployment, crime and health whilst they improve physical & mental health, self-esteem and self-confidence of participants. E.G.Lewis Group were recognised for a unique award on behalf of the panel of judges in relation to our dedication and commitment towards removing the stigma of mental health within a male orientated industry, of which we operate within.
Sometimes we say we’re fine… When we’re not. #AskTwice
